Manitoba Conservative Caucus Statement on Canola and Pulse Tariffs

Ottawa, ON – Manitoba’s Conservative MPs are calling on the Liberal government to stand up for Canadian farmers as new tariffs on canola and peas threaten the livelihoods of producers across the Prairies.

Earlier this year, China imposed tariffs on Canadian canola and peas. Now, India has followed suit with new barriers on yellow peas - another major blow to our agricultural exporters. These markets are essential to Manitoba’s farm families, who are already struggling with record-high input costs and shrinking returns.

Instead of fighting for our producers, the Liberal government has been asleep at the wheel. Under Justin Trudeau and now Mark Carney, Canada’s trade relationships have deteriorated with key partners - from China and India to the United States. While other countries are securing new market access for their farmers, Canada is losing ground.

Canola is Manitoba’s top cash receipt – generating $2 billion dollars into our local economy. We can not afford to put this sector in jeopardy.

Manitoba’s economy depends on agriculture. From the canola fields of Westman, to the pulse growers of the Red River Valley, and the mixed farms that stretch across the Parkland and the Interlake, our farmers work tirelessly to feed families here at home and around the world.

Conservatives will always stand with our farmers and demand that the federal government take action to defend their interests. Canada needs leadership that will push back against unfair trade practices, rebuild relationships abroad, and open new markets for our world-class products.

Manitoba farmers don’t need more excuses — they need results. We’ll keep fighting to make sure Ottawa delivers.

– Manitoba Conservative Caucus
